Compression and Support Therapy

The concept of compression therapy lies on a simple principle: the application of an elastic garment around the leg with graduated compression (strong at the ankle and decreasing going up the leg).  The compression garment (socks, stockings, etc) helps the venous return (blood to the heart), decreases venous pressure (pressure exerted on the walls of the veins by the blood), prevents venous stasis (slow blood flow), deterioration of venous walls, and efficiently relieves aching and heavy legs.

This treatment is prescribed by a physician to treat chronic venous disease (heavy legs, varicose veins, oedemas, leg ulcers, etc.), phlebitis (inflammation of a vein), thrombosis (formation of a blood clot), post-surgery treatment, sclerotherapy, and any other forms of varicose vein treatment.  Compression garments can also help prevent venous insufficiency during pregnancy and prolonged sitting during travelling on airplanes, in cars, and trains.

Depending on the medical condition, medical compression therapy can be applied in different forms (socks, stockings, pantyhose, arm sleeves, etc.) and different pressures (20-30mmHG, 30-40mmHG, 40-50mmHG, and 50-60mmHG).  These devices should always be measured and dispensed by a certified compression fitter.

Compression garments can also benefit active individuals with no present history of venous insufficiency.  In the active individual the compression garment can help to promote overall leg health and prevent varicose veins.  They can be especially beneficial to individuals who are standing or sitting for long periods of time during their daily routines. Individuals like healthcare workers, bank teller, store clerks, travelers, etc. can realize an extremely large benefit from wearing compression garments daily.

Compression garments are available to Rehab Clinics Canada locations. For more information on the product and types please go to www.sigvaris.ca.
